Gifts of art

Henrik Ibsen was presented with many works of art to mark his 70th and 75th birthdays in 1898 and 1903. A number of contemporary artists wished to honour the playwright in this way.

Faun and kentaur, by Louis Moe.

Leading Norwegian visual artists of the period, including Frits Thaulow, Christian Krogh, Harriet Backer, Kitty Kielland and many more, are represented in the collection. The fact that all these artists wanted to honour Ibsen says much of his position in the Norway of the time and among his fellow artists.

The collection comprises 54 works of art and is owned by Skien municipality. These works are on display at Skien library and can be viewed during the library’s opening hours.
